I am a first-time candidate for Cheboygan County Commissioner. Northern Michigan has been my life-long home. I joined the U.S. Army directly after high school and served 3 years as a Postal Clerk, with an honorable discharge.  I put myself through college using the GI Bill. While on Active Duty, I served 5 ½ years in the Michigan Army National Guard in the Logistics Department, ensuring that all troops received food, housing, fuel for their vehicles, and proper pay for their service.

I completed both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Central Michigan University which allowed me to pursue a dream of becoming a math teacher.  Later, an Administrative Certification followed from Grand Valley State University.

In 1996 I began teaching at Onaway High School.  After 8 years I was assigned to teach Onaway Middle School Math. Teaching went far beyond time in the classroom, as many students had additional urgent needs. I worked in the After School Program, providing students with a safe, warm place while receiving additional tutoring. At times students needed food, clothes, shoes, eyeglasses, etc., and I felt a need to provide these items to ensure that all students had equal and fair educational opportunities.

Teaching provided experience with negotiating union contracts, working with parents, assisting and supporting new teachers, and working closely with administration on policy development. My background in working with people from diverse backgrounds, policy development, and application of facts would serve our community well.

My wife and I have been married for 29 years and we have 2 fabulous children. I am a firearms owner and am fiscally conservative. I don’t have all the answers, but I am driven to find the best solutions to any issue before me by listening to your concerns, analyzing the facts, and choosing the best course of action to benefit our community.

I am running for Cheboygan County Board of Commissioners because I have the time and skills needed to move the county forward and help improve the lives of all residents. As your District 1 Commissioner, I will work toward providing opportunities for:

●     Affordable housing

●     Rural broadband

●     Childcare for working families

●     Better infrastructure

●     New jobs
