Learn About the Candidates: Kyra Harris Bolden
Justice Kyra Harris Bolden is serving in her second year on the Michigan Supreme Court. Justice Bolden’s historic appointment made her the first Black woman to serve as a Justice in Michigan, and she has recently launched her campaign to retain her seat. In her first year, she had the distinct honor of authoring three majority opinions, one unanimous. After receiving her JD, Justice Bolden became a criminal defense attorney and later, a civil litigation attorney. She then served in the MI House of Representatives for two terms wherein she sat on the Judiciary Committee. She crafted and passed five bipartisan bills, that became law, which focused on criminal justice reform and protecting survivors of sexual violence. Justice Bolden is an active member of her community, serving as a member of the Association of Black Judges of Michigan, Wolverine Bar Association, Straker Bar Association, Oakland County Bar Association and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Justice Bolden has received several awards including the Detroit NAACP’s Ida B.
